"Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,

We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!"

— Humbert Wolfe, "Autumn Resignation

October is here and this year's gardening season is (almost) over. We had our first frost 2 weeks ago, and with frost 3 days in a row, there is not much left to grow.

Even though the nights are cold, the late Autumn sun is shining bright, allowing us to enjoy its warmth for a little while longer. But still, darkness is creeping in as the days get noticeably shorter. And yet, it is not the time for rest, as there is so much left to do and preserve before we enter the quiet days of winter.

Squashes and pumpkins took over our countertops, waiting to be properly washed and stored away in the larder. Onions are almost done curing and will be ready to braid soon. Tomatoes are still ripening by the window, almost ready to be turned into various sauces and other delicacies. There are bushels of local organic apples that need to be processed and canned. Just now, a small batch of apple butter is in the slow cooker, making the house smell of cinnamon and sugar.

At the grocery store and at the farmer's market, there is an abundance of fresh and seasonal produce available. Often for a very sweet price, we can stock up on carrots, parsnips, beets, and other delicious root vegetables. These will keep for a long time in the refrigerator, but I plan on freezing and canning some so I can enjoy them all winter long.

Dear reader, it is not yet too late to put food by for your family and yourself at today's prices. We all know that the cold season is coming, and having a well-stocked pantry and freezer will allow you to reduce your grocery bill during the next few months. Soon enough, most of the local fresh produce will be taken away from the shelves, replaced by out-of-season goods imported from far away and at a very expensive price.

I know that I will be spending this month in the kitchen, canning, fermenting, dehydrating and freezing away for later. Little by little, it will all add up.

The season of rest is near, but we are not there yet!

Blessings,

Mortie
